A Constructive Genetic Algorithm for permutation flowshop scheduling

چکیده
The general flowshop scheduling problem is a production problem where a set of n jobs have to be processed with identical flow pattern on m machines. In permutation flowshops the sequence of jobs is the same on all machines. A significant research effort has been devoted for sequencing jobs in a flowshop minimizing the makespan. This paper describes the application of a Constructive Genetic Algorithm (CGA) to makespan minimization on flowshop scheduling. The CGA was proposed recently as an alternative to traditional GA approaches, particularly, for evaluating schemata directly. The population initially formed only by schemata, evolves controlled by recombination to a population of well-adapted structures (schemata instantiation). The CGA implemented is based on the NEH classic heuristic and a local search heuristic used to define the fitness functions. The free parameters are defined after a Design of Experiments (DOE). The computational results are compared against some other successful algorithms from the literature on Taillard’s well known standard benchmark. The computational experience shows that this innovative CGA approach provides competitive results for flowshop scheduling problems.

This investigation considers a reentrant permutation flowshop scheduling problem whose performance criterion is maximum tardiness. The reentrant flowshop (RFS) is a natural extension of the classical flowshop by allowing a job to visit certain machines more than once. The RFS scheduling problem, in which the job order is the same for each machine in each layer, is called a reentrant permutati...
متن کاملSolving Re-entrant No-wait Flexible Flowshop Scheduling Problem; Using the Bottleneck-based Heuristic and Genetic Algorithm
In this paper, we study the re-entrant no-wait flexible flowshop scheduling problem with makespan minimization objective and then consider two parallel machines for each stage. The main characteristic of a re-entrant environment is that at least one job is likely to visit certain stages more than once during the process. The no-wait property describes a situation in which every job has its own ...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of Sequencing Heuristics for Flexible Flowshop Scheduling Problems with Unrelated Parallel Machines and Dual Criteria
This paper deals with the heuristic solution of flexible flowshop scheduling problems with unrelated parallel machines. A setup time is necessary before starting the processing of a job, where the setup time depends on the previous job. No preemption of jobs is allowed. As objective function, this paper considers the minimization of the positively weighted convex sum of makespan and the number ...
متن کاملOn Solving Flowshop Scheduling Problems
This paper proposes two variants of heuristic algorithms to solve the classic permutation flowshop scheduling problem. Both algorithms are simple and very efficient. The first algorithm is a constructive heuristic which builds the optimal schedule of jobs on the basis of a selective-greedy process. To escape the trap of local optimum points, for the second heuristic algorithm a stochastic featu...
متن کاملAn NEH-based heuristic algorithm for distributed permutation flowshop scheduling problems
Distributed Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Problem (DPFSP) is a newly proposed scheduling problem with a strong engineering background. Whereas there is a body of work on scheduling problems in the past decades, the literature on DPFSPs is scant and in its infancy. Motivated by the good performances of some heuristics in a very recent work, we propose a constructive heuristic algorithm enhance...
